What makes commerce “agentic”?
Traditional AI in ecommerce responds: a shopper asks, the system answers. Agentic systems pursue a goal across several steps: understanding what’s needed, gathering information, making a decision within set limits and completing the action. The word “agent” simply means software that acts on someone’s behalf.
What does it look like on each side?
- Shopper-side agents research products, compare options and may eventually complete purchases for a person, often through AI engines rather than direct store visits.
- Merchant-side agents, AI Agents, answer customers, recommend products, recover carts, create content and monitor operations for the store.
Why does it matter?
As more product discovery happens through AI, stores with clear, accurate, well-structured product information and policies are easier for agents to understand and recommend. On the merchant side, the ability to act raises the importance of permissions, guardrails and human handoff.
How Yep AI uses it
Yep AI Agents are merchant-side agents with defined jobs: the AI Support Agent resolves support requests, the AI Marketing Agent writes and publishes content, and the AI Operations Agent monitors stock and order status. Each works within limits you set, with sensitive decisions escalated to your team. The AI Marketing Agent’s SEO content also supports generative engine optimisation.
