How do you calculate customer lifetime value?
A simple starting formula: CLV = average order value × purchases per year × expected years as a customer. Multiply by gross margin for a profit-based view. More advanced models use cohorts and churn rates, but the simple version is enough to guide decisions.
Why does CLV matter?
CLV puts acquisition costs in context. If customers typically return several times, a first order that barely breaks even can still be a good investment. It also shifts attention from one-off conversions to the whole experience: including what happens after purchase.
How can you increase CLV?
- Excellent post-purchase support. Fast, accurate order answers build confidence to buy again.
- Personalised recommendations based on what the customer already likes.
- Retention marketing such as replenishment reminders and loyalty campaigns.
- Consistent experience across web, email and social.
- Raising average order value thoughtfully.
